ibelieveitwasmygreatgrandparent replied to your post “SICARIO is much more PRISONERS than ENEMY…”
roger deakins hasn´t chosen wisely his latest projects. Just as darius khondji, who keeps wasting his talent with woody allen
sicario isn’t a “bad” movie, it’s just really annoying to watch. a lot of my current frustration was definitely caused by the other moviegoers at my screening, who were reacting to the intense violence/torture as if it was a marvel movie or something.
i think the point of the film was to explore just how unfocused the war on drugs is (which is true and should have been more adequately examined), but the audience i saw this with definitely attributed the horrible characters (mostly Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin) as legit (and sometimes humorous?) heroes, and that immediately makes the film much less effective. it wasn’t able to properly address its point of view.
deakins’ work is by far the most exciting thing about this movie. it’s honestly the only reason to see the movie in theaters if you want to.
Again. What. The. Fuck. Are you talking about. Bitch where was this movie annoying to watch. These are complacent, hard-boiled characters coming together because they each have reached the same glass ceiling in their war on drug cartels.
Brolin is a seasoned “consultant” who is so blatantly jaded to his losing battle that he has no other option but resort to levity. Blunt is a dedicated, exemplary by-the-book task force officer who knows she doesn’t even scratch the surface of victory against bad guys. And del Toro is just a columbian ronin who is out to get revenge on the kingpin who 1. Made him who he is and 2. brutally murdered his family.
We interact with the two men through Blunts perspective. And as such, we are thrown into the middle of this chapter of the story just as she is. Clueless and in the dark. You mentioned its “as annoying as Prisoners” which is the same concept of tension with an obstacle. You say this mainly because you are ignorant.
The performances you watch in either of these movies by Denis is not just acting. It is a psychological display of emotions in the universe of these characters. In Sicario, it’s obvious the antagonist is a drug cartel leader. But it is the antagonistic affect drugs have on these three strangers that tells the story.
So tell me again why this movie was “annoying.”
